Hint: She owns one of the most fascinating shoe collections in Toronto.

Swiss born Sonja Bata, the wife of Thomas Bata, with whom she built one of the world’s largest shoe companies, is the founder of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, with its magnificent shoe collection ranging from centuries old footwear to modern day celebrity shoes.

Ms. Bata’s inspired necklace is just one of the 35 necklaces exquisitely handcrafted by Order of Canada artist Donald A. Stuart in honour of Canadian women who have made significant contributions in sports, politics, science and the arts. The Homage exhibit is on at Elmwood Spa until May 31, 2011.

Donald A. Stuart, one of Canada’s leading gold/silversmiths, is the only craftsperson to be awarded the Order of Ontario, the RCA (Academician of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts) and the Order of Canada in recognition of his illustrious career as a craftsman and educator and his profound and lasting influence on Canada’s Arts and Crafts industry. He is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art (AOCA) and an MFA graduate from the School for American Crafts, Rochester, New York. Stuart is also the founder of the Jewellery and Metals program at Georgian College in Barrie and has continued to mentor generations of artists.
