Cause for Celebration: The 2016 YWCA Toronto Women of Distinction Awards
Women have come a long way, and every year is not only a reminder of their progression, but also an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments. This is exactly what YWCA strives to achieve on an annual basis – to recognize women who make a positive significant difference in the lives of females (both young and old) with a focus at the local and international levels.
The tradition has been ongoing for the past 35 years, and this time around is no different. On Thursday, May 26 with CBC personality Marivel Taruc as host and several distinguished honourees, The 2016 YWCA Toronto Women of Distinction Awards was a truly inspiring evening.
Elwood Spa and Bangkok Garden are proud to be a sponsor of this wonderful event –as we have been long supporters of the advancement of women. Not only that, but there is a personal connection to the cause! Did you know that the same structure that houses Elmwood Spa used to be the YWCA’s original home? That’s right, 18 Elm Street was renovated in the 1980s and became place for people to gather, network, learn and enjoy a break from their busy lives.
Our founder and her family demonstrated great leadership and donated a considerable amount to support the YWCA Elm Centre and Irma Brydson Place – the largest donation ever to a social services organization in Toronto. The YWCA’s Elm Centre, provides affordable housing to women who have addiction and mental health issues, those who are of low-income or of Aboriginal ancestry. The centre opened back in 2012 and boasts a sunny rooftop garden, a concierge, and most important of all, 300 affordable units.
Congratulations to all the wonderful women who were honoured and took an award home. To view a list of this year’s award winners, click here. Proceeds from the night will go toward programs that assist over 12, 000 girls and women in and around the Greater Toronto Area.
