Facials are meant to be a pampering experience, in addition to getting you glowing results. We’re bringing you some ways you can create a serene atmosphere and complete the oasis-like environment at home. To get your started on all the steps you need for an at-home facial, read more on the tips from Heather MacKay, our Senior Spa Services Manager here.

  • Set the Scent: light a refreshing candle or start an aromatic diffuser to set the mood.
  • Lower the Light: opt for dim lights if possible, and avoid bright neon lights. A lamp is ideal.
  • No Notifications: put your phones and tablets on silent. Or better yet, set it on night mode so your only focus is you.
  • Comfy Clothing: wear loose, comfortable clothing –loungewear is best! Better yet, sport a v-neck if you can so that you are able to bring the facial products down into your decollete area.
  • Mind the Music: play some serene music in the background. Our recommended playlists include: Peaceful Retreat, Spa Treatment, and Calm Vibes.
  • Do Get a Drink: settle in and sip on a cup of calming herbal tea. Or grab a glass of your favourite wine. Feeling like something fresh? Whip up a smoothie, packed with nutrients and vitamins (great for the skin).

Aside from being cold and grey, winter can also take its toll on skin! To help combat the effects, our Senior Manager of Spa Services, Heather MacKay, has put together a must-have list:

Elmline

  1. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Serum: The serum is a moisturizing powerhouse and all around moisture magnet that will instantly plump up and smooth wrinkles and fine lines. Hyaluronic Acid famously Holds 1000 x its weight in water, our Spa Care Experts highly recommend this serum as a great addition to your daily skincare routine and to prep your skin prior to face cream and makeup by boosting your skin’s radiance and texture.
  2. AHA Cream Exfoliator: One of our Aesthetician’s tops picks, it is formulated with a blend of Alpha Hydroxy acids from sugar cane, lemon, orange, apple and infused with Shea butter.  This soft, creamy exfoliator will gently smooth and refine the skin by sloughing away dead skin cells and help facilitate optimal penetration of our serums and creams.  Use once or twice a week, gently massage the pearlescent cream into the skin until product ‘melts’ and rinse well with tepid water.

 Guinot

  1. Guinot Protective Face Cream: For those who like to participate in outdoor activities, like hiking, skiing, tobogganing or even just a nice brisk walk in the crisp winter air, this cream is an excellent winter cream to protect against the elements.  Formulated with Omega 6, Avocado and Shea Butter and Phytoprotectol to nourish, soothe and reduce inflammation.
  2. Red Logic Cream: During the winter months, sensitive and delicate skin types can experience increased redness due exposure to the harsh elements of our weather, wind and cold. It is formulated with an exclusive active ingredient “Veinoderm”, extracted from Arnica, and acts on redness to neutralize its appearance while Aloe Vera soothes and moisturizes.  Made with a tinted green tone to neutralize redness.

Skin Regimen

  1. NEW Nourishing Lip Balm (arriving soon): A creamy, fluid balm to nourish and protect the lips from external aggressions, it strengthens the barrier to prevent dryness and cracking. With precious oils and Avocado Butter extracted from the fruit pulp, Karité Butter extracted from a plant native to West Africa and Almond Oil: rich in emollient and nourishing fatty acids, deeply hydrates and restores softness and elasticity.
  2. Microalgae Essence: it feeds the cells on a deeper level, and keeps them stronger and more active which you need when skin is under stress.  It can be used as a sheet mask for a deeper hydration (soak 2 tissues in the Essence and place on skin for 10 minutes).
  3. Tulsi Booster: is a gift for dry skin during the dry winter months to bring extra lipids and emollience. A few drops on our fingertips and gently pat into the skin,  great under a moisturizer or alone, the Tulsi (also known as Holy Basil) will act as an elixir for dry and depleted skin, restoring moisture and protection!

Swiss Line

Cleansing properly is the first step to ensure effective action of your skin care products.  The cleanser that is good for the summer may not serve our skin well during the cold months of winter so for those who typically prefer a foaming or sudsy cleanser, a simple adjustment like switching our cleanser can make all the difference in the moisture levels in our skin.

  1. Swiss Line Comforting Emulsion Cleanser: is a gentle hydrating cleanser that does not to strip the skins hydrolipidic film, which is there to prevent moisture loss.  It contains Wild Alpine Waters sourced from the tops of Swiss mountains packed with Calcium & Magnesium which strengthen your skin and boost skin’s metabolism, Baobab Tree Extract, a resilient plant can withstand the arid lands and drought of Australia and Africa, supply the skin with moisturizing and regenerative reparative lipids, excellent for extreme climate conditions.  Can be used to remove eye makeup as well.

Extra help to protect your skin from “seasonal” dry patches & rashes

During these Winter Months, some people develop a ‘seasonal’ allergic reaction on your skin, eg:  patches of eczema, contact dermatitis, even hives. For these issues, you need products that ‘respond’ to the internal inflammations which are responsible for aging the skin.

  1. Essential Serum: improves the skin’s ability to balance itself, contains ‘actibiome’ which works to balance the skin’s micro biome, calming soothing, for skin that needs extra protection during periods of stress.  Lightweight gel-serum texture.
  2. Aqua Calm Cream: this is your SOS product for skin that is reactive, allergic, thin.  Aqua Calm Cream provides a true ‘Blanket’ to soothe, calm, and provide immediate relief.  Contains the ‘Force Vital 24 Nutrients’ specifically Edelweiss (for a strong skin defence system), Coltsfoot Leaves (contains lipids and glucoses for their powerful moisturizing capabilities) and Gentian Root Extract (for flavonoids and minerals for softening and purifying benefits).   Also contains a special ‘Anti-Redness’ complex of arnica, cypress and malt to improve micro circulation, soothe and protect.

Let’s face it–there are only so many hours in a day, and the majority are spent sleeping, working, or whipping up meals (ok, and watching hours of Netflix). Sometimes, washing our hair is the last thing on an always lengthy to-do list, and can feel like a bit of a chore. Here are a few tips to make your locks last in between washes and prevent oil build-up!

Say “No Thank You” to Towels

We all do it –get our hair twisted in a towel as soon as  we step out of the shower. But it may not be the best trick for your tresses. Keeping it all under wraps will make your roots oily and ends dry, which is not ideal. This also creates frizz, so it’s especially bad for those with curly locks. Instead, quickly pat your hair with a towel to remove excess water, and let it air-dry a bit before you brush/blow-dry. If you have curly hair, cut out the towel altogether and make a cotton tee your BFFL. Use it to gently wring your hair and then wrap it up just as you would with a towel –its less-rough texture will help reduce frizz. Try this Moroccanoil Smoothing Mask to keep locks smooth.

Give it the Cold Shoulder

That’s right, your hair’s had it with the heat! Rinse it with cold water for extra shine, and to help close the glands that produce sebum and are to blame for oily locks.

Look, but Don’t Touch

Tucking behind your ears? Getting those bangs away from your face? Constantly touching your tresses will leave them looking oily and flat. So keep them back with bobby pins or hair ties or headbands. These great headbands come in tons of in fun colours and designs!

Avoid Post-Workout Washes

Breaking a sweat is great, except for your hair. As tempted as we may be to wash it right away, it’s not a good idea –especially if workouts are a daily occurrence. Instead, brush it out, use a spray bottle with water, and blow-dry on low heat to freshen up. Or for a quicker fix, spray on some dry shampoo and massage into your scalp. Moroccan Oil carries great options, that are tailored to your hair colour (light and dark tones –so you don’t end up with contrasting residue). We carry the full line of Moroccan Oil products in our online retail boutique.

What’s your tried and trusted way to fend off oily hair? Share your tips and tricks with us on Instagram. Check out our favourite grease-fighting hair products available on The Elmwood Shop!

Is your phone the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you look at before bed? Are you glued to your laptop all day? Do you take more video calls these days than in-person meetings? Are you spending hours in front of the TV every night watching the latest episode of Selling Sunset?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, your skin may be in trouble! Our laptops, phones, TVs, and tablets are all sources of blue light. A new article released by the New York Times explores the dangers of our blue-light drenched skin! Here’s what we learned about the effects of blue light on our skin and how we can protect ourselves:

Blue light interrupts your sleep cycle

According to Michelle Henry, a dermatologist in New York, “Blue light damages the retina and reduces your excretion of melatonin. “Melatonin is a hormone that your brain naturally produces that helps you fall asleep. Laptops and handheld devices give off more blue light than your TV because of the proximity to your face.”

Blue light ages your skin

Blue light destroys the collagen in your skin. Collagen is what helps skin stay firm, plump, and youthful. To help these signs of aging we recommend our Swissline Bespoke Facial that uses active ingredients to tackle the effects of lifestyle aging. For at-home care, try our Elmline Anti-Aging Bundle which helps soften and hydrate the skin while stimulating and supporting collagen production.

Blue light can cause hyperpigmentation in medium & dark skin

Unlike UV light, blue light can cause pigmentation on medium and darker skin while leaving lighter skin relatively unaffected. To lighten pigmentation, try the Swiss line Age Intelligence Perfect Skin, the Skin Regimen Night Detox, or the Guinot Brightening Vitamin C Serum.

Turning your device on “night shift” can help prevent skin damage

Most devices have a dark screen mode. For example, Apple has a “night shift” setting that creates a warmer screen tone.

Wear sunscreen inside!

Mineral sunscreens with iron oxides can help protect your skin. Tinted sunscreens can also do the trick! We recommend trying LASPA’s Moisturizing Mineral Sunscreen.

Antioxidants & Vitamin C protect against premature aging due to blue light

Antioxidants and Vitamin C treatments can help repair skin cells. We recommend trying elmspa’s Guinot Vitamin C Facial which is a triple-action brightening treatment combining dermabrasion exfoliation, a potent dose of Vitamin C, and a pro-collagen masque. Or try our ElmLine Vitamin C Serum for at-home use.

In today’s world, it’s impossible to avoid blue light entirely. Try to keep your screen time to a minimum, use high-quality skincare products and give your skin a boost with a professional facial whenever you get the chance. Your skin will thank you for it!

If the earlier sunsets have not given it away, we’re in a transition! That’s right, gone are the days of eating gelato, lounging by the pool, and basking in the sun. Even though we’ve been lucky enough to plenty of warm weather, it’s time to get into an autumn state of mind.

As the clocks tick towards a new season, it means that it’s time for new routines. We have three ways to make sure you’re all prepared for fall!

Put your Best Face Forward: Facials should be a regular part of your skin care routine, but even more so at the switch of seasons. So pencil in some face time because summer can leave our skin dehydrated from all the heat. Our Spa Care Experts™  suggest that we renew our skin with exfoliation, and prepare it with nutrients for the colder days ahead. Suitable for all skin types, we recommend our ElmLine Essential Facial to remove dead skin cells and leave the skin radiant and refreshed. For more facials, you can take a look the facials currently available at our boutique location, elmpa (557 Church Street) by clicking here.

Clean out the Closet: To make space for all those warm and cozy knits, tuck your summer stuff away. Whether you slide them under your bed or store them in a spare room, we love the idea of vacuum-packing all those extra outfits that are no longer in season. Also, if you have fall items that you can part ways with, it’s a good time to donate. It’s also a great time to organize all of your make-up, reassess the shades you’re keeping and they ones you’re tucking away until next year. For tips on how to do this, check out our Instagram Live session with organizing expert Effy Terry click here.

Break a Sweat:  Leaving summer behind can also mean becoming less active –fewer strolls in the park, and more curling up on the couch. But we can list many reasons why breaking a sweat should be a priority. Whether you stretch it out with some yoga at our neighbour Iam Yoga, or bust a move to YouTube workouts (Blogilates is always fun), pick something that you’ll stick with and can enjoy indoors. It’s easy to hide and hibernate as we get closer to fall, so start planning your new fitness routine early.

Whether you’ve always been a fan of the season change or still need some convincing, we bet these tips will make the transition an easier one!

We can’t wait to welcome you back to Elmwood Spa, but unfortunately we’re not opening our doors quite yet. We are however, thrilled to announce the re-opening of our boutique sister location, elmspa, situated in the Church-Wellesley village, as of July 16, 2020. elmspa is a hidden gem, which temporarily closed among many hospitality businesses throughout the city in early March, has spent months planning a responsible and cautious reopening strategy that puts the safety of guests and staff first.

Our flagship location, Elmwood Spa, will remain closed at this time.

An offspring of the acclaimed Elmwood Spa, elmspa offers exclusive treatments for those seeking a tropical escape in the city. elmspa approaches health and well-being holistically, with a Feng Shui space encouraging harmony, relaxation and wellness.

elmspa is following safety recommendations and guidelines from the provincial and municipal governments, senior health officials and the CMTO. Prior to reopening, much work has been dedicated towards implementing a thorough reopening plan, which includes comprehensive training, testing, and manuals for staff, in addition to the following Covid-19 specific safety procedures that are implemented from booking, to check-out. Here’s what you can expect on a visit to elmspa:

  • All guests and staff will be required to take a contactless temperature check upon entering the spa
  • Masks will be mandatory for all guests and staff at all times
  • At reception a short Covid-19 screening questionnaire will be completed
  • Plexiglass barriers have been installed at check-in and check-out and in our manicure and pedicure area
  • The spa will open under a limited capacity
  • Contactless payment will be available
  • We ask all guests to wash their hands prior to receiving services. Staff will be following strict hand sanitization measures before, after and during services
  • Heightened sanitization throughout the Spa
  • As always, each treatment room and station will be entirely disinfected between appointments. We will also be implementing electro-static fogging technology
  • To help you navigate the space, physical distancing indicators will be positioned throughout the spa and enforced by staff
  • Magazines and self-serve tea/refreshment stations will be removed. We will be offering individually packaged refreshments for guests to enjoy
  • We’ll be open from 11am-7pm daily

Though the protocols of the spa have changed, the goal of a visit to elmspa remains the same.

“I know that in extraordinary times like these people need an oasis more than ever, so we are thrilled to announce that though Elmwood Spa remains closed, we will still be able to offer guests a much-needed escape at elmspa as of July 16 at 11:00 AM,” said Marie Picton, Executive Manager of Elmwood Spa, elmspa and Bangkok Garden Restaurant. “We are confident our new processes and procedures will ensure the safety and well-being of our guests and staff.”

elmspa is now taking appointments for select massages, body treatments, manicures, pedicures and body waxing –  and is delighted to provide respite to the Toronto community during these difficult times.

We will update this page with information about the reopening of Elmwood Spa as it comes available.

TAKE THE QUIZ>

If you answered…

Oily

Oily skin shines all over! Pores tend to be enlarged, and breakouts are frequent (both blackheads and whiteheads). Though you may have just washed your face, you’ll see the slickness return soon after.

SHOP “OILY” SKIN TYPE PRODUCTS HERE>

Dry

Dry skin can become itchy and scaly, often in patches. Pores are so small they are often invisible, and there is less elasticity. Fine lines are also more visible than in other skin types and the complexion can be dull. Hot water, UV rays, and hot indoor temperatures can make it worse.

SHOP “DRY” SKIN TYPE PRODUCTS HERE>

Combination

Combination skin tends to be dry in some areas, while oily in others. The tell-tale sign tends to be the concentration of oil in the t-zone (forehead, nose, chin) and blemishes also tend to happen in those areas, while the rest tend to be dry. Pores tend to look larger there too.

SHOP “COMBINATION” SKIN TYPE PRODUCTS HERE>

Normal

A normal skin type is balanced, not too dry and not too oily. There are few imperfections, or blemishes and there is no severe sensitivity or redness. Pores are barely visible and the complexion is overall radiant.

SHOP “NORMAL” SKIN TYPE PRODUCTS HERE>

Sensitive

A sensitive skin type is easily irritated. Whether it’s with the use of new products, temperature change, sun exposure, fragrance, or other factors, the skin is often red, itchy, and bumpy. Though breakouts less of a concern, broken capillaries are visible.

We’re all sitting a bit more than we usually do, whether it’s crouched at a desk working from home, or bingeing on Netflix. Our very own RMT, Katrina, has put together stretches for us to help release muscles. Remember to work within your own comfort level and be able to breathe comfortably while holding stretches

Warm up : Do each one for a minute, move slowly and gently.  Head turns, shoulder shrugs, shoulder rolls (forward and back) arm circles (forward and backwards), side twists, finish with knee-ups.

Stretches

  • Ear to shoulder: Stabilize your shoulder by putting you arm behind your back or holding unto your pant. Bring the opposite ear to shoulder (right ear to right shoulder) for 30 seconds. Then slowly turn head so nose is towards armpit. Hold 30 seconds.  Repeat on other side. This stretch targets the neck muscles upper trapezius and levator scapula)
  • Side Bends: Stand with feet hip width apart. Keep your shoulder relaxed and raise arms over head. Hold left wrist with right hand and gently lean to right. Feel the left side of your body, from hip to wrist lengthening with each breath. Hold 30 seconds. Repeat other side. This stretch focuses on the latissimus dorsi.
  • Cactus arms: Standing with feet hip width bring arms out to 90 degree angle creating a “cactus” shape. Keeping the upper shoulders and neck relaxed bring your shoulder blades together in the mid back. Hold for 45 seconds. This stretch lengthens the pectoralis major and minor muscles.
  • Forward bend with knees bent: Stand with feet hip width apart and a generous bend in the knees. Hing forward from the hips and rest your torso on the upper thighs. Relax your head and arms forward. (if too intense can do this seated on a chair). Hold for 60 seconds. This stretch targets the lower back area and is a gentle traction for the whole spine.
  • Seated figure 4: Sit on a chair. Bring right ankle to rest on left knee, creating a figure 4 with the legs. To increase the stretch, you can apply gentle pressure on top leg, below knee. Hold 30 seconds, repeat other side this targets the gluteus and deep hip muscles.

As spring starts to show its true colours (and warmer temperatures) we’ll be out for longer walks. It’s important to look after out skin, as increased sun exposure can lead to skin damage.

Discontinue the use of glycolic acids and retinols as they can make your skin photosensitive, causing you to burn more easily. You should also avoid exfoliating, as it can scrub away layers of your skin, making it more sensitive to the sun. Last but certainly not least, hydrate, hydrate, HYDRATE! The sun can dry our skin. Make sure you put some moisture back in it to keep it plump –and get the best of both worlds with these SPF creams and moisturizers.
